APS Expands Heat Relief Efforts in Maricopa County, Ariz.
Arizona Public Service’s (APS’) service territories often exceed temperatures of over 100 degrees during the summer, including in Maricopa County, home to more than half of Arizona’s population. To keep customers safe during these sweltering months, APS supports and partners with community organizations and nonprofits to provide heat relief.
In 2024, APS supported programs by the Salvation Army and the Arizona Faith Network to distribute more than 188,000 water bottles to community members and partnered on heat relief programs that helped more than 128,000 individuals. The Salvation Army operates cooling and hydration stations in nine counties across the state. The Arizona Faith Network runs hydration, cooling, and respite centers in churches across high-need neighborhoods in Maricopa County.
Recognizing the limited mobility of some Arizona residents, APS has partnered with Solari and Lyft since 2021 to provide rides to cooling centers for eligible Arizonans seeking shelter from the heat. Last year, the program provided 9,317 heat relief rides to Arizona residents.
In partnership with AllThrive 365, APS addresses heat-related health hazards for vulnerable households in Maricopa County by supporting emergency repair or replacement of air conditioning systems during the hot summer months.
Extreme heat can drive up electricity costs due to increased demand for air conditioning. APS offers a wide range of customer assistance programs year-round that provide discounts and payment assistance to qualified customers.
Heat relief is too large an issue for any one organization to tackle alone. As communities across the country continue to face extreme heat, electric companies like APS are dedicated to supporting community organizations and nonprofits to ensure that customers stay cool and safe during the summer months.
APS serves about 1.4 million homes and businesses in 11 of Arizona’s 15 counties, and is a leader in delivering affordable, reliable, and clean energy in the Southwest. Partnerships with local governments and nonprofits are critically important to APS, demonstrating their commitment to the communities which they serve.
