As the frequency, severity and cost of natural disasters continue to increase, county officials must be prepared to respond to these events efficiently to return our communities and residents’ lives back to normal as quickly as possible. This interactive training – led by Hagerty Consulting, a NACo Corporate Premier Partner who assists communities in preparing for and recovering from disasters – will provide attendees with invaluable insights into the steps local officials should take before, during and after a disaster to protect life and property. All attendees will receive certification for completing this course.

The 63-acre Apollo Beach Nature Preserve, located along the eastern shore of Tampa Bay, was acquired by Hillsborough County in 1996 through its Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program. The county and its partnering agencies restored native habitats, including estuarine marsh, tidal creeks, beach dunes and upland islands. Recreational amenities include nature trails, picnic pavilions, beach access and an ADA-accessible observation tower that provides panoramic views of Tampa Bay, downtown St. Petersburg, downtown Tampa, and Florida’s amazing sunsets.

The Hillsborough County Resource Recovery Facility is an award-winning waste-to-energy facility that serves the community with reliable and sustainable waste management, processing up to 1,800 tons a day. It incinerates garbage to produce renewable energy to power adjacent Hillsborough County infrastructure, with the excess power sold back to the grid. In addition to the energy and financial benefits, processing waste via the Resource Recovery Facility reduces the county’s greenhouse gas emissions compared to landfilling.

By partnering with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), counties with military installations can conserve natural resources, support agricultural working lands and strengthen military readiness. Learn how defense counties partner with the DOD’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Program, Sentinel Landscapes Partnership and over 30 local partners to collaboratively form the Avon Park Air Force Range Sentinel Landscape in south central Florida. Since 2016, this sentinel landscape has worked to protect nature-dependent rural economies, preserve the area’s biodiversity, establish conservation easements and enable landowners to keep their land in perpetuity for future generations.

Meanwhile, recent trends in the closing of rural hospitals and changes in authority related to ambulance services have left many counties with few options for responding to medical emergencies.
