The Department of Human Resources’ Veteran Outreach Program was implemented in March 2014. The primary purpose of the program was to establish hiring initiatives for the veteran community and transitioning servicemen and women from the local military bases in San Diego County. The County of San Diego has approximately 260,000 veterans and over 160,000 active duty service members and has the second largest veteran community in the United States. To align to the County’s goal to strengthen our customer service culture and to ensure a positive customer experience, the Veteran Outreach Program established solid working relationships with all five major military installations and promoted employment opportunities with the County of San Diego. The County informed the community of programs available to these active duty servicemen, women and their spouses through programs like the County’s Veteran Service Office, Department of Child Support Services and volunteer opportunities with County Fire Services organization. To date we have made contact with over 7,300 veterans and their spouses and have attended over 100 military-related career fairs, employer panels, workshops and Transition Readiness Seminars through the Veteran Outreach Program.
