The “Taking Care of Our Own Benefits Seminar” is a program provided by the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety in cooperation with the York County Professional Firefighters Association. It was designed to educated the department’s firefighters and their family members about the importance of survivor planning. Firefighters face extraordinary risks everyday on the job, many times resulting in loss of life, injury, or disability as a result of their employment. The kick-off of the program involved the presentation of an informational seminar by experts in survivor planning. This was followed up by the implementation of an annually updatable Survivor Benefit Information Packet. By providing the program for these firefighters and their families, they have heightened awareness of how to avoid the tragedy that can be heaped upon tragedy that occurs when there is a lack of survivor benefit planning by the firefighter, the firefighter’s family and the department.
