In 2009, over 20 employees were identified for a reduction in for due to budget reductions and the reorganization of the Local Managing Entity. While the Employment staff is usually focused on recruitment, this year, the staff was asked to focus on reassignment. Of those employees, 12 were successfully placed in other county position, seven were terminated with severance and four retired with full benefits. Since the economic situation is affecting counties across the country, this process that Wake County found do successful in reassigning the targeted employees could easily be replicated by other counties. When this process began, the Wake County Employment staff met as many times as necessary with each of the impacted employees individually. In these meeting, they worked with each employee to identify interests and skill sets. Research was conducted on all current Wake County job openings and efforts were made to identify the vacancy that was the most appropriate. If the employee showed interest in the position, the recruiter personally contacted the hiring manager and departmental head to discuss the employeeâs qualifications and how the individual would be beneficial to the department. The Recruitment staff did not only do this for a few employees, but for a total of 18 employees.
