Section 50 of Civil Service Law requires the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service/Human Resources to administer examinations for positions which are classified in the competitive class in order to ascertain the merit and fitness of applicants. Along with administering Civil Service examinations, the county is also required to issue announcements for each competitive examination. Information on the examination announcement includes the minimum qualifications required, the subjects of the examination, salaries and vacancies. As a result, in 2009, the Examinations Division of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service/Human Resources initiated the Online Examination Brief Program to replace the cumbersome, labor intensive, time consuming and expensive mass mailings with efficient, automated, timely and essentially free delivery of the same content through a simple e-mail request. The Examinations Brief is now available online through the Online Examination Brief Program. Potential applicants and other interested parties sign up to receive it via e-mail. This eliminates the need to mail hard copies of the brief and gives the county the ability to make updates and changes whenever necessary while ensuring that county residents have accurate information regarding civil service examinations available on the internet.
