About the Program

Category: Personnel Management, Employment and Training (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

In support of a County Commission goal to seek innovative ways to improve operations, better serve customers and reduce costs, Human Resources implemented a My Wellness Program. Objectives of the program were to enhance the physical, financial and emotional well-being of Broward County employees, improve employee productivity; and minimize health insurance costs by lowering claims utilization. This program empowers employees with information, tools and support to take charge of their well-being and move toward overall optimal health. Cornerstones include a network of six onsite Wellness Resource Centers with access to nutritionists, a “My Wellness” website and comprehensive online wellness program with educational opportunities accessible on and off the job as well as links to useful resources and information, and interactive employee activities offering incentives for participation. From this, nearly 1,500 employees have shed 1,564 pounds and walked over 5,500 miles. The American Heart Association recognized Broward County nationally as a Fit Friendly company, and awarded special recognition for Worksite Innovation. The County’s 2012 employee health insurance contract saved approximately $1 million, in part due to its wellness initiatives.
