San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency’s (HHSA) High School Student Outreach Program is a pro-active succession planning program exposing high school students to career opportunities within HHSA. This program provides opportunities for students to learn about HHSA careers through unpaid internships, volunteer opportunities, mentorship programs, job shadow events, field trips, and classroom presentations by HHSA employees. As a pro-active recruitment program, the High School Student Outreach Program relies heavily on building partnerships with various school districts and personnel in order to have opportunities to interact with student, in addition to relying on traditional recruiting techniques. The High School Student Outreach Program allows students to spend time with HHSA employees, learn about their careers and obtain life skills. Additionally, the program creates leadership and mentoring opportunities for staff assigned to assist students by sharing their daily job functions and vision/mission of the organization. This program strives to not only expose students to career opportunities with HHSA, but also to excite students about county government as a future employer of choice as they enter the job market upon completion of their education.
