The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs (SCDOLLCA) initiated the Suffolk County Healthcare Occupation Opportunity for Learning program (Project SCHOOL) in September 2010 as a five year pilot program, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services. The goal of Project SCHOOL is to train Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and low income individuals in regional demand occupations in the high growth, medical and health care fields and move entry level healthcare professionals up the career ladder to higher paying middle skill positions. To date, the SCDOLLCA has trained over 850 eligible county residents in health care related professions with over 500 of these graduates now employed training related occupations. Three new best practices were implemented during project SCHOOL: Career Pathways, Specialized Orientations and the Incentive Benchmark Program. These programs have led to higher completion and placement rates.
