A new 16-month Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee Program, created in 2014, is helping Gwinnett County (GA) meet its rapidly growing need for paramedics. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services is the largest fire service district in Georgia, serving a current population of approximately 920,000 and continuing to attract about 18,000 new residents each year. There are 16 cities in Gwinnett County but only one has chosen to operate its own fire department. The department of about 900 personnel operates 30 fire stations with one more under construction and 25 advanced life-support medical units strategically located throughout the countyâs 437 square miles. Gwinnett is one of five fire departments in the U.S. that operates its own accredited paramedic education program.
