In order to become a more successful employer, it is important to have a diversified workforce. In 2009, Clackamas County administration and Employee Services (HR) created the Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) and solicited interested county employees to apply to serve for a two-year term. The DAC would be responsible for promoting diversity and inclusion within the internal employee county structure, making recommendations, hosting events, and providing general information and opportunities to county employees regarding issues surrounding diversity. In approximately two years, the DAC has authored a monthly column in the employee newsletter- Insights; hosted lunchtime panel discussions and guest speakers for employees on a variety of issues including African American experiences/Black History Month, poverty, understanding Islam, Hispanic heritage, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experiences and others. The DAC sponsored two day-long seminars for employees facilitated by local experts in the field of diversity. In 2011, the DAC hosted and organized a Diversity and Cultural Awareness Fair for employees and invited different groups, nonprofits and other organizations to display information booths and answer questions. The fair also featured music from three multicultural music groups and county employees were allowed time during the day to attend the fair. A very successful campaign, this project has boosted staff morale and has provided for a more understanding and friendly work place.
