In collaboration with the County Human Resources (HR) team, the Travis County Auditorâs Office training team created two online e-Learning courses to orient and train newly hired employees in the use of the countyâs Employee Self-Service (ESS) system. ESS is a web based application in our financial system that is used for activities such as benefit enrollment, tax and direct deposit set-up, and time and leave reporting. HR incorporated the courses in the countyâs New Employee Orientation curriculum. A key component of the courses are short, embedded âhow toâ videos. The videos cover topics that are the most important to a new employees. A total of 16 videos are embedded in the two courses. The seven benefit videos cover each step of the enrollment process. The other nine videos focus on a specific activity, such as completing a timesheet or viewing a pay statement. The online courses and videos efficiently and effectively deliver training and information to all employees, not only at orientation, but as an ongoing resource afterwards. The courses are developed internally, so the costs are minimal. Employees can conveniently access the training courses from their desk, whenever they need them, which increases productivity and decreases travel time and costs to attend in-person classes. Since these training videos are posted separately on the training website as well as within the course, employees can access them at any time, empowering them to confidently and correctly use ESS. Efficiency is achieved with fewer questions to HR and Payroll staff related to enrolling in benefits, setting up direct deposits and taxes, completing timesheets, and other activities.
