Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) provides connections that improve peopleâs lives by planning, designing, building, maintaining, and operating approximately 2,000 miles of roads extending across the 9,000 square miles of Maricopa County and serves more than four million residents. The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is used to meet MCDOTâs goal of building connections and improving Maricopa Countyâs transportation system. This entails moving TIP projects through the planning, scoping, design, construction, and closeout phases by using the processes in MCDOTâs Project Development Manual (PDM). With this in mind the MCDOT Project Management and Construction Management Branches partnered with the MCDOT Infrastructure Technology Center (ITC) to develop a project management tool that would help them manage their projects more efficiently. The result of the teamâs collaboration is the TIP Project Status Tracking Tool (TIP application). The TIP application provides a hub for all project related data, including status, and allows the project team to track and report on the schedule, milestones, activity, and budget for all projects in the TIP. This has led to improved communication, more realistic project schedules, and better budget forecasting resulting in improved project delivery. Currently, MCDOT is managing over 90 active projects with a total annual budget near $130M. The TIP application plays a critical role in reducing ambiguity and moving projects through the development life cycle more efficiently.
