Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) provides connections that improve people’s lives by planning, designing, building, maintaining, and operating approximately 2,000 miles of roads extending across the 9,000 square miles of Maricopa County and serves more than four million residents. The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is used to meet MCDOT’s goal of building connections and improving Maricopa County’s transportation system. This entails moving TIP projects through the planning, scoping, design, construction, and closeout phases by using the processes in MCDOT’s Project Development Manual (PDM). With this in mind the MCDOT Project Management and Construction Management Branches partnered with the MCDOT Infrastructure Technology Center (ITC) to develop a project management tool that would help them manage their projects more efficiently. The result of the team’s collaboration is the TIP Project Status Tracking Tool (TIP application). The TIP application provides a hub for all project related data, including status, and allows the project team to track and report on the schedule, milestones, activity, and budget for all projects in the TIP. This has led to improved communication, more realistic project schedules, and better budget forecasting resulting in improved project delivery. Currently, MCDOT is managing over 90 active projects with a total annual budget near $130M. The TIP application plays a critical role in reducing ambiguity and moving projects through the development life cycle more efficiently.
