Leon County’s 2017-2021 Strategic Plan includes two new features: Targets and Bold Goals. All Targets and Bold Goals are associated with each of the County’s four strategic priority areas: (1) Economy, (2) Environment, (3) Quality of Life, and (4) Governance. Specifically, Targets communicate to staff throughout the county the results that we expect to achieve through the collective execution of our strategic initiatives. Examples of Targets from Leon County’s Strategic Plan include, “Reduce by at least 30% the average time it takes to approve a single family building permit” and “Open 1,000 new acres of park land to the public.” Bold Goals differ from Targets in that they are truly stretch goals which we acknowledge will be big and difficult to achieve, but are worthy of our best efforts precisely because they are big and difficult to achieve. They are not tied to specific programs or current resources, but rather Bold Goals require us to explore new partnerships, identify new opportunities, and embrace the new ideas of our employees. Current Bold Goals for the next five years include, “Grow the five-year tourism economy to $5 billion” and “Implement 500 citizen ideas, improvements, solutions and opportunities for co-creation.” Instituting Targets and Bold Goals as part of Leon County’s five year strategic planning process requires the highest level of collaboration throughout the organization.
