In an effort to commemorate and provide a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made by South Alabama’s veterans, the Baldwin County Commission began working 5 years ago to establish a State Veteran’s Cemetery in the county that would serve as an appropriate final resting place for these heroes. During this time, the Baldwin County Commission purchased over 100 acres of the 103-acre Veterans Cemetery site property, with the remaining adjacent acreage being donated by a local veteran and County resident. The Baldwin County Commission then worked with members of the Alabama legislature representing Baldwin County toward the passage of an act which would formally authorize the State of Alabama Board of veterans Affairs to establish and operate a State Veterans Cemetery. This led to the collaborative effort of the Baldwin County Commission with the State of Alabama Board of veterans Affairs to secure U.S. Department of veterans Affairs State Cemetery Grants funding and the establishment of what will be a State Veterans Cemetery in Baldwin County, which will compliment the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs network of national cemeteries.
