Since 1995, the Sacramento County Adult Drug Court program has been an effective, evidence-based solution for non-violent offenders with histories of drug addiction. Eligible defendants enter a plea and sign a contract accepting admittance to the Drug Court Program on formal probation with their jail or prison sentence stayed. The participants return to Court on a regular basis and the Judge reviews their progress. The program provides on-site treatment/counseling, incorporating support and ancillary services. After participants graduate from the program, charges are dismissed. If participants do not comply with requirements of the program, they return to custody to serve their full sentence. One program associated with the Sacramento County Adult Drug Court Program is the Break Away Bike program. The Break Away Bike program was created to address the needs of Adult Drug Court participants who are homeless and/or have no transportation. The program provides a means of transportation for clients to travel to treatment service, as well as employment opportunities. Through the Break Away Bike program, Adult Drug Court participants can earn a donated bicycle. Eligible clients must have a minimum of two weeks attendance in the program, with six consecutive negative drug tests and no pending sanctions.
