The Oakland County Clerk’s Office new online marriage license applications save residents time, gas money, and the inconvenient drive to the county court house. Previously, couples who wanted a marriage license had to appear, in person, at the office. They filled out and submitted a marriage license application, waited three days as required by Michigan law, and then returned to the office to pick up their license. Created at almost no external costs, the new online service allows couples to apply online and make a single trip to the office to pick up their marriage license. The benefits to the office are even more significant, allowing staff to more efficiently manage the workload and reduce wait times for counter customers. The County Clerk worked with state lawmakers and the state county clerks association to have the necessary legislation introduced to change state law. Thus far, almost half of the applicants are using the online system.
