Prince George’s County’s initiative and innovation exemplifies what is possible, and what will be the standard expected of emergency medical services systems in the future. Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department’s Mobile Integrated Healthcare program serves as a model for the State and region. This program demonstrates the evolution of the practice of para-medicine. This paradigm shift emphasizes the integration of all components of the healthcare system, with the goal of improving health outcomes and reducing unnecessary burdens on the healthcare system. Mobile Integrated Healthcare’s active, hands-on approach to ensure that each person’s care plan is specific to their needs, helps guarantee they will have access to the most needed available services. The dedicated work of the program’s community paramedics ensures identification with patient-focused management of gaps in their healthcare and social needs. The Mobile Integrated Healthcare program has enrolled nearly 100 people since it began. Since its inception, the program performed 1,831 contacts with patients, directly resulting in a significant reduction in unnecessary use of the 9-11 system. The Prince George’s County Mobile Integrated Healthcare initiative has taken a proactive approach to ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to live healthier and happier lives.
