The number of unidentified remains throughout the country is approximately 40,000 according to a Bureau of Justice Statistics special report. Each unidentified person represents a lack of closure for that person’s family and loved ones. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s John and Jane Doe Center is dedicated to providing closure for these families. A fully dedicated Medical Examiner Investigator and a team of volunteers vigorously exhaust all available resources to identify approximately 100 unidentified persons each year. The team uses an array of techniques to identify these unidentified persons, who are commonly referred to as “John Doe” or “Jane Doe.”
