The MDPD Legal Tip of the Day program is a training program that provides law enforcement officers with legal guidance on specific job related topics. The concept is an e-mail based training program in which officers receive training on topics such as constitutional law, state law, departmental polices, and law enforcement practices. Each Tip is prepared on a specific topic and is accompanied by a photograph or clipart that illustrates the topic. Similar to a comic strip format, the Tip is usually a short lesson, between a sentence or paragraph in length, followed by the graphic illustration. The format of the Tips are designed to make them easy to read and understand. The Tips are disseminated via e-mail to sworn police officers daily. Similar to a calendar of the day, an officer is able to review their MDPD Legal Tip of the Day e-mail prior to the beginning of his/her shift, and can apply the lesson of the day to his/her job performance. The Tips are usually saved by personnel for later reference since they have sparked thoughtful conversations and debates among officers about best police practices, and are often used by supervisors as training sessions for their squads.
