About the Program

Category: Criminal Justice and Public Safety (Best in Category)

Year: 2017

In 2016, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office developed the Heroin Education – Resisting Opiates (H.E.R.O.) Program in order to educate high school aged youth about the dangers of heroin and opiate use. The H.E.R.O. Program uses realistic demonstrations and true stories told by inmates, family members and recovering addicts in a school assembly format to educate high school seniors about the deadly nature of heroin and opiate use. The success of the H.E.R.O. pilot program in 2016 led to a second program that was offered this past February, 2017. To date approximately 500 students have participated in the program. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will continue to provide this program to schools that are interested in offering this education to their high school seniors.
