As governments grapple with ever-decreasing budgets, staff must seek innovative service delivery methods. This often means doing more with less. Technology now affords the ability to support a workforce that can remain in the field, being productive rather than being confined to a traditional office space. The Department of Agriculture, Weights, and Measures (AMW) implemented a wireless fleet management program that combines Automatic Vehicle location (AVL) and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies. The integrated approach takes location tracking to a new level by combining it with the ability to remotely monitor engine diagnostics and collect data on vehicle speed, fuel consumption, mileage, hours in service, idle time, and more. The end result is increased productivity with existing staff and resources.
