About the Program

Category: Criminal Justice and Public Safety (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

On July 1, 2019, The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office initiated and implemented the Deputy Service Aide program in an effort to better serve the communities and public. National statistical data had indicated applications for sworn law enforcement positions had been on a consistent decline and agencies throughout the state of Arizona, to include the Maricopa Count Sheriff’s Office, were struggling to find viable applicants interested in a career in law enforcement. In addition, employer paid benefits for law enforcement personnel within the state had been on a steady incline. The Deputy Service Aide position was developed in an effort to introduce qualified, service-oriented professionals, to the law enforcement industry. The focus has been lower priority calls for service that do not require sworn personnel, allowing sworn deputy sheriffs to manage higher priority situations. The program has created a cost savings to taxpayers and reduced response time for members of the public in need.
