The Suffolk County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council is comprised of town, county and state government representatives along with representatives of the justice system and community. The primary purpose of the CJCC is to reduce crime and recidivism by promoting communication, collaboration, education, system-wide coordination, and decision-making among local juvenile and adult criminal justice agencies and local government resulting in increased public safety for all Suffolk County. This nomination is submitted to acknowledge a specific project conducted by the CJCC in 2008, entitled “Jail Population Study: An Analysis of Inmate Characteristics for Suffolk County.” Combining data collected by the Sheriff’s Office and the Health Department, the study presented an accurate and current profile of all inmates, allowing the criminal justice system to adopt the most efficient management plans for the population of offenders. The system can better identify and respond to any changes in the jail population which may require revisions to other policies and procedures within the system.
