The Suffolk County Police Department developed and implemented a regional sex offender management system that was designed to track area sex offenders across political and jurisdictional boundaries. Generally, sex offenders that move between jurisdictions are subject to different levels of monitoring and oversight due to differences in the jurisdictionâs resources and procedures. More alarmingly, sex offenders who perpetrate crimes in adjoin jurisdictions can function with relative impunity due to a deficiency in information sharing. This newly implemented system and database provides a virtually seamless platform in which detailed sex offender data can be stored and shared between participating agencies throughout the region. Additionally, sex offender data is automatically data-mined throughout a bevy of public and commercial records to further enhance oversight and maintain compliance. The ultimate result is a one-of-a-kind system that provides law enforcement agencies throughout Suffolk County with the resources ad tools needed to better ensure public safety.
