The Child Welfare Military Project (CWMP) is aimed at effectively protecting the children in military families and providing appropriate services for military families. There are four military installations in El Paso County. These consist of Fort Carson Army Post, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base and the Air Force Academy. With multiple deployments and a dramatic increase of troops at Fort Carson these has been a spike in military cases related to child welfare. The CWMP is a unit within the Department of Human Services (DHS) that manages most of the cases involving military families ranging from neglect and domestic violence to physical and sexual abuse. The caseworkers have established working relationships with the various military organizations such as their Central Investigation Division, the Military Police, Family Advocacy and Military Caseworkers. Each of the caseworkers assigned to the unit are also part of the military giving them an intimate knowledge of the culture and a unique ability to relate to the families. Through the forged relationships and consistency in caseworkers, DHS is better able to serve these military families, with the focus of protecting children and keeping families intact.
