Twenty-one recruits stand at ease at the front steps of the historic Chesterfield 1917 Court Building. Sweat can be seen pouring down the sides of their faces. The group just finished a Basic Academy physical fitness run in squad formation that ended up in front of the building where a member of the Sheriffâs Office leadership team awaited them in in full uniform. Once in position they received a history lesson from Major M. Wilkerson on the historic landmark that highlights the construction of the courthouse and historic cases conducted within it. Afterwards the recruits were then given a tour of the interior of the courthouse and an overview of the layout of the courtroom. This is but one of many academy history runs that were scheduled throughout the basic academy nineteen-week long curriculum. Each lesson was delivered by a different member of the leadership staff at different locations within the county complex. Sometimes the âsurpriseâ location can be on the running trail where as they come around a corner they are met by a member of the leadership team in full uniform standing at a podium on the path.
