As Mecklenburg County prepared for their much anticipated, and sometimes feared, countywide 2019 property assessment revaluation, we knew that the appeals process needed serious update and streamlining to better serve our customers. In the prior countywide revaluation, the appeals processes, (both informal and formal Board of Equalization and Review appeals) were fraught with errors, overrun by the sheer volume, and time consuming for both the customer and the CAO staff. A key component to making the Mecklenburg County 2019 countywide revaluation successful would be proper planning, preparation, and disposition of both the informal and formal appeals process afforded to all customers. Transparency, communication, and timeliness were our keying driving components in planning for the 2019 appeals processes. By creating and implementing a plan to put those components into action, we reduced the number for formal assessment appeals from 18,687 in 2011 to 9,952 in 2019!
