The County of San Diego’s Adult Protective Services (APS) Training Academy is a yearlong program designed to support new Adult Protective Services Specialists by providing the knowledge, tools, and resources to become outstanding investigators in the field. The program is part training, part support group and strength-based coaching, and is designed as a multi-medium learning model with monthly in-person meetings to explore different areas of APS investigation with the assistance of expert community professionals. Participants are expected to complete the San Diego State University (SDSU) Academy of Excellence APSWI core curriculum and to be eligible for the nationally recognized National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA) Adult Protective Services Certification twelve months after graduation. The certificate demonstrates staff are trained and prepared to investigate and remediate elder and dependent adult abuse. While there is required and formalized standard training for Child Welfare Services nationally, there is not for APS yet.
