The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its monthly jobs report for May, reflecting a recovery in overall labor market conditions, but not for local governments. To compound the nearly 800,000 local government jobs lost in April, local governments lost another 487,000 in May. This additional loss brings the total number of local government jobs lost for just these two months to nearly 1.3 million, including both education and non-education related jobs, and reveals the financial challenges of county governments across the nation.
