Local delegations from states across the U.S. will join state and federal leaders throughout 2025, part of the White House State Leadership Conference series
WASHINGTON – This week the National Association of Counties (NACo) joined the White House in welcoming to Washington the first in a series of delegations of county leaders attending “County Days” convenings. These convenings, hosted by the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs as part of the White House State Leadership Conference initiative, demonstrate the importance of counties as part of the local-state-federal-tribal intergovernmental partnership.
Over 60 county leaders from Ohio visited Washington for the first County Days event, including remarks from members of President Trump’s cabinet and other high-level speakers from the White House and federal agencies. Speakers provided county leaders with updates from their departments and took questions. White House Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Alex Meyer spoke to attendees about his office’s role in facilitating intergovernmental partnership.
“As essential intergovernmental partners at the local level, America’s county officials are dealing with a tremendous amount of change right now,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “County leaders appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from White House officials about the administration’s priorities, perspectives and pathway forward. Whether it be infrastructure financing, disaster assistance, energy, housing affordability, public lands management or health and human services, it is critical that federal, state and local officials keep an open dialogue and work together for our shared constituents.”
During the first Trump Administration, local government leaders from all 50 states participated in the White House Leadership Conference, and the return of County Days was first announced by Meyer at NACo’s 2025 Legislative Conference in March.
“We are bringing back County Days,” Meyer said to an audience of 2,000 county leaders at the conference. “We are looking forward to hosting everyone at the White House and making sure that we get everyone back to the people’s house.”
The series commences as county officials persist in advocating and providing local context and priorities in the ongoing budget reconciliation process. Last week, NACo released analyses highlighting both positive and concerning aspects of the bill that received approval from the House Budget Committee.
