The Miami-Dade County Cooperative Extension Service’s (CES) of Regulatory and Economic Resources Department (RER) in partnership with University of Florida, Parks Recreation and Open Spaces Department (PROS) and other business and community partners developed the Youth Fishing Program promoting resource awareness and stewardship through the sport of fishing for youth and families. This program targets first time anglers introducing them to the sport of fishing and developing their appreciation for the renewable marine resources and coastal marine ecosystems. Created in the current format in 2010 Youth Fishing Program offers Youth Fishing Clinics and Camps and Family Fishing Boat Trips combining educational components with an interactive, positive hands-on fishing experience. Through the Youth Fishing Program children can get reconnected with nature while developing critical thinking and important life skills. The ultimate goal is promoting environmental awareness about local marine resources, getting kids excited about science and physical education, promoting responsible fishing techniques, and developing a sense of stewardship for the environment. 2,000 children have participated in various fishing activities. Participants were evaluated through skill tests and post-program written surveys. Customer satisfaction with the Youth Fishing Program was 4.8/5 or 96%. 80% of fishing camp/clinic participants were able to properly handle a fish and utilize a dehooking tool. 90% of participants increased their understanding and appreciation in the marine environment. 66% will “definitely” fish more often because of their participation in the Youth Fishing Program.
