Several federal agencies are responsible for regulating different aspects involving merchandise imported into the United States as well as merchandise exported abroad from the U.S. These agencies responsible for imports and exports constantly revise, enhance, update, or terminate trade procedures and/or regulations. Small businesses may not always be aware of these changes, and may often be unable to comply with the new updates and changes that are often times consuming and complicated. A small business may be assessed a hefty fine for non-compliance, resulting in litigation, seizures, or termination of operating permit or license. The Office of Economic Development & International Trade (OEDIT) of Miami-Dade County developed the Import/Export Workshop series, in partnership with a local law practice specializing in, among other things, international trade. The law office provided these services on a pro-bono basis to assist small- and medium-sized enterprises in Miami-Dade County involved in the import/export sector to receive training on how to navigate through these challenges In international trade.
