The County of San Diego’s Workers’ Compensation E-Billing Program is a paperless initiative which appropriated previously unused vendor software to expand a paperless billing option to large scale medical service providers. By leveraging these existing resources in new ways, the County is now processing 38 percent of all workers’ compensation bills received through the new paperless medium, as opposed to the 100 percent papered system before program implementation. Bill processing time has been streamlined to 15 days, down from the previous 60 day average, and a 45% improvement in bill processing time. The efficiency of the new paperless system has improved customer service and freed up staff time to allow them to pursue additional cost saving tasks.
