The Public Work’s Women’s Council became operational in 2005 to address obstacles faced by women in all classifications and to promote advancement and empowerment. The Council’s task was to identify and recommend solutions to obstacles that prevent women’s growth, advancement, and empowerment in a historically male-dominated Department. Four separate committees (steering, membership, mentoring, and communications) were established. Membership in the Council is open to both men and women and has grown from fourteen to over fifty. Accomplishments consist of launching an award-winning life mentoring program, setting up a speaker circuit, conducting leadership retreats, and developing organizational programs for the advancement of Department of Public Works employees.
