About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2012

Diabetes has profound effects on the physical and financial health of millions of Americans. The NC Diabetes Organization reports that 8.5-10.3% of Wake County’s population is either diabetic or pre-diabetic. Studies further show that every $1 in $10 spent in healthcare costs can be attributed to diabetes and related diabetic medical issues. To assess clinical and economic outcomes, Wake County partnered with Diabetes Management Solutions (DMS) to revise their community based program, the Diabetes Bus, to fit into a workplace setting. The program was redesigned to offer onsite educational classes and to have personal one on one meetings throughout the year with employees. Forty Wake County employees participated in the pilot program. The program had a 93% participation rate and was successful in helping a number of participants improve their glycemic control (HgA1c). Data suggest that the program will yield a large return on investment in future years.
