The Volusia County Emergency Management Smartphone Application (App) has multiple features and functions that help promote awareness and information sharing throughout all phases of emergency management. The App contains advanced features that strive to help keep the community prepared and informed about a disaster or incident. The home screen delivers as much information as possible through social media posts, push notifications, and news updates. Users also have the ability to submit damage reports, get contact information, and access Volusia County Emergency Managementâs social media pages. The map feature includes a weather radar, emergency shelter information, evacuation zones, and routes. The emergency plan features an area for the community to create and update their individual or family emergency checklist and emergency contacts, preparedness information before an incident, and information about what to during and after an incident along with the ability to share their location to a selected group of users. The news feature shows a history of push notifications received through the App as well as news posted within the App. Users can also receive National Weather Service alerts as a push notification. The objectives for the App are to deliver timely information to the community, provide awareness, enhance preparedness, communicate damage reports with the community, and create an overall method of two-way communication between emergency management and the whole community. Each of these objectives are designed to ensure that there is a seamless flow of correct information between the county emergency management division and all members of the community. The county emergency management division has a presence on social media and in the community already, this App enables emergency management to reach larger audiences and provides the community with tools to be more prepared for a disaster or incident so they can recover quicker, which enhances the communityâs resiliency.
