Volunteer St. Lucie, a program of United Way St. Lucie County, Inc., is an extension of services previously provided by United Way, but was implemented with assistance from the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners. The program’s mission is “to facilitate and foster the recruitment, retention, and recognition of volunteers through … a centralized facility devoted to connecting caring citizens with an opportunity to serve.” Volunteer St. Lucie provides benefits to the volunteers through recruitment, registration, and a basic screening process for volunteers to determine the best potential match for their skills, talents, interests, and availabilities. The program further offers benefits to non-profit and municipal organizations by opening its database of volunteer opportunities, as well as providing for the recruitment and referrals of volunteers, professional development opportunities, and coordinated events including, but not limited to, seminars and volunteer fairs. Finally, perhaps the greatest additional benefit of the Volunteer St. Lucie program is that it maintains a database that can be activated for use in the event of an emergency requiring the recruitment and/or coordination of volunteers.
