Category: Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation (Best in Category)

Year: 2021

In the Spring of 2020, the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) identified the need for a digital platform where library patrons could experience the library’s permanent art collection beyond its physical gallery space through a virtual exhibitions program. The program was created in response to the restrictions and closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the desire to allow Miami-Dade residents to enjoy curated exhibitions from the comfort and safety of their homes. The initiative was implemented by the MDPLS Art Services and Exhibitions and Digitization Divisions, and is designed to help young artists, researchers, educators, County residents and beyond to gather information about important Miami artwork, while also introducing them to the library’s Permanent Art and Digital Collections. These collections are a reference source that reflect Miami’s cultural composition and chronicles its artistic and social history, and it has earned national recognition.
