Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2015

In 2012, the Orange County Veterans Advisory Council (OCVAC) identified the need to increase awareness of veterans programs available in the community for veterans and their families. This led to an Orange County Board of Supervisors’ directive to establish a comprehensive list of veteran programs provided by County departments. The project was a collaboration between the Orange County Veterans Service Office (VSO), Office on Aging, and Chief Executive Office (CEO) – IT. Prior to the publication of this directory, information on veterans-related services and programs were not centralized making referrals difficult. At a regional senior event in 2013, the first edition of the Veterans Resource Directory was unveiled and distributed to the attendees at the event. The Veterans Resource Directory comprehensively and systematically links veterans and their families to plethora of services provided by the County and other organizations. Public and private partners in Orange County call the directory a landmark contribution destined to become a template for other counties to follow. The directory was updated and expanded in 2014. The Veterans Resource Directory is available for download from the Orange County Veterans Service Office website (http://veterans.ocgov.com/).
