The Boulder County Trip Tracker program encourages school staff and students, along with their parents, to reduce motor vehicle traffic at schools around peak drop-off and pick-up times. This is done by giving rewards to those that bus, bike, walk, and carpool to school, in lieu of a family driving to school in individual cars. The students are rewarded with Tracker Bucks that can be spent at locally-owned participating businesses. The goal of the program is to get families out of cars and demonstrate how easy it is to get to and from school using alternative or âgreenâ modes of transportation. Not only do participants help reduce vehicle emissions, but they also develop an active, healthier lifestyle by doing so. One long-term program outcome is to have the kids who participate today continue using alternative modes of travel and eventually teach their own children that travelling without a car is fun, easy, and healthy. The Trip Tracker Programâs results have been outstanding. Participation in the program increased more than 100% during the 2015-2016 school year, with more than 28,000 vehicle miles and more than 26,000 pounds of CO2 reduced, more than 87 million steps taken by participants, and more than $29,000 put back into our community by school-aged kids and staff who participate (see attached Year Two Dashboard â SY 15-16).
