Over the last one hundred years, Shreveport and Caddo Parish has suffered from deforestation. Our tree canopy and trees are being removed faster than they are being replanted. There has been an effort with several local organizations to replace those trees by planting approximately two hundred and fifty trees a year. A valiant effort, however, this has not been enough to catch up with all the trees that have been dying due to natural causes. The efforts of Caddo Parish in planting trees on Arbor Day is to not only plant 288 trees, but also to bring awareness to the community the need to restore our tree canopy. The community presently has had the luxury of enjoying trees planted by our great-grandparents; those trees’ saplings must be nurtured as we would nurture our offspring. The fresh air and lower cooling/heating bills we are accustomed to enjoying will be lost if our tree canopy is not replaced. Without the replanting of trees, Caddo Parish will look and feel like several towns to our hot, dry, and treeless west.
