Traffic Calming PlanHinds County, MississippiAbstract:The Hinds County, Mississippi Public Works Department offered a new program to the Hinds County residents in 2009 which addressed concerns regarding vehicle intrusion in neighborhoods with excessive speeds and cut through traffic. The new program was called the Hinds County Public Works Department’s Traffic Calming Plan. The citizens of Hinds County requested the Hinds County Public Works Department to make modifications to the roadway that would passively slow vehicles down. It is community planning at its best, involving residents and County staff in developing a plan of physical improvements and/or modifications to the roadway that passively seek to address the concerns. Traffic calming consists of a package of measures affecting the movement of vehicles and other traffic for the purpose of promoting safety. The traffic calming plan will effectively and efficiently address the constituent’s concerns. The traffic calming plan improves the delivery of services to the citizens of Hinds County, MS.
