About the Program

Category: Human Services (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, local libraries and community providers initiated Time for Tea sessions based on the recognition that parents of small children up to seven years old with disabilities have a need for an open discussion with experts in the field. The purpose of these sessions is to bring parents together to discuss their concerns and struggles with the care of their children. In addition, these sessions provide support, resources and serve as a mechanism for building parent networks in a relaxed small group setting, while also enjoying refreshments. Successful and salient topics include methods to handle challenging behaviors, stress management with yoga, maintaining friendships, proper lifting techniques and relaxation. A critical aspect of Time for Tea is child care, which is typically difficult to access. Child care for the participants is provided by licensed vendors in an adjacent room and enables parents to benefit from the session. This invaluable forum has given parents the freedom to discuss issues associated with the care of their child that would otherwise be difficult to discuss in public.
