Wake County is consistently rated one of the best places to live and work in America. However, the Human Resources Department’s recruiting and marketing tools did not showcase Wake County as an employer of choice. In addition, the County was missing out on some of the most important technology and online recruiting tools in today’s competitive market. Vacant position postings were difficult to find and were dryly written, the recruiting and application system was difficult to navigate, and our online presence was minimal. The Human Resources Department placed an emphasis on talent management with a goal of getting the right people in the right place at the right time. As such, it was necessary to change the County’s approach to recruitment. In 2013, efforts were focused around embracing different forms of media and technology, branding and marketing the County, demonstrating uniqueness and culture, transforming position postings, improving the user experience when applying, attracting a long-term employee committed to public service and showcasing the many benefits of working for Wake County Government. Successful measures include increased accessibility and visibility, reduction in error bounce rate, an increase in the number of applications referred, and an increase in position filled the first time posted.
