Children and Youth In or Out of the Classroom Programs The Spotsylvania Environmental Education Development Mobil Unit, (SEED), is a traveling exhibit that can be brought to schools or events. We designed our Environmental Education Mobile Unit to help educate students and adults about the environment and the impact we have on it both positive and negative. The mobile Unit has 10 walls that educate about Wastewater Treatment, Water Treatment, Compost, Landfill, Decomposition, Litter Prevention, Recycling, Treasured Natural Resources, Water Conservation and Energy Conservation. Augmented reality (AR) is cutting-edge technology. With the camera and sensors in a smart-phone or tablet, AR adds layers of digital information – videos, photos, sounds – directly on top of items in the world around us. The walls in our unit are augmented with Layar (augmented reality). This technology makes learning fun and interactive. Our hope is to make a difference, help change habits and encourage good stewardship in Spotsylvania County and the Commonwealth. By teaching our residents and students the following information, we have made them aware of the impact they have on our environmental footprint. Because of our efforts we feel that a considerable reduction has been made and will continue for years to come. The SEED Project has motivated people to take action and get involved in Litter pick up events along our highways and streams. We have been asked to speak at several State-Wide Conferences and we have shared our resource with many localities throughout the Commonwealth. The SEED Project is the first of its kind on the East Coast. Our project is 100 % Grant/Private Funded, Cost of Project $27,725 • Layar tracks the amount of scans per wall. We average 6,000 scans in 2014.
