About the Program

Category: Health (Best in Category)

Year: 2010

Through the collaborative planning efforts of a consortium of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, an Early Childhood Direction Center, the local Child Care Council, a local speech pathologist, and school districts’ Committee on Preschool education Chairpersons, this workshop was designed to help community child care facility directors and staff, and preschool program directors and staff to support young children with special needs effectively in the day care/nursery school group setting. The objective of this training was to teach early childhood care providers the referral and eligibility process for special education services; explore an Individual Educational Plan—what it is and what role the childcare provider has in its implementation; the responsibilities of the professionals that enter the child care locations; and how they all can work together to help support special needs children in inclusive settings.
