The South Hampton Roads Regional Taskforce on Ending Homelessness was formed when seven localities in Virginia—Isle of Wight County and the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Franklin. The Planning Council and United Way of South Hampton Roads, joined together to address homelessness on a regional basis as an addition to each locality’s individual efforts. As a result, these localities have achieved results together that they could not have achieved separately. Through the Taskforce’s efforts, 120 new units of permanent supportive housing for the chronically homeless have been developed; a database of affordable housing has been created; funds from a variety of sources have been leveraged by the regional approach; best practice ideas from around the country have been presented to the region at two major regional conferences; and the Southside Hampton Roads Mayors and Chairs have committed to the development of a formal regional plan to end homelessness.
