About the Program

Category: Civic Education and Public Information (Best in Category)

Year: 2016

In 2013, Oakland County set about creating a Social Media Policy and a Social Media Strategy. Subject matter experts were engaged to ensure that both were comprehensive, effective, and functional. The Information Technology (IT) Department drove the creation of the both with members of the eGovernment social media and Digital Editorial Team. Our goal was to establish a transparent Social Media Policy that would educate and empower our employees while protecting our brand; as well as an enterprise-wide Integrated Social Media Marketing Strategy that would connect departments’ social media efforts with the centralized goals of the County to increase citizen engagement. Since the adoption of both, the county has seen great success in using social media to achieve their business goals. Some notable successes have been seen by: the Animal Control department using Facebook to increase adoption rates and reunite lost pets, the Economic Development staff using LinkedIn to connect with companies they want to attract to Oakland County, the Board of Commissioners using a social media campaign to promote a Human Trafficking event which resulted in a sold-out crowd, and reaching half a million people during live tweeting during Oakland County’s 2016 State of the County Address.
