In an effort to police smarter, with fewer resources, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has developed the Sheriff's Analysis Driven Law Enforcement (SADLE) Team. SADLE employs predictive policing techniques to make the streets safer in unincorporated San Diego County. Rather than addressing crimes on a case by case basis, SADLE uses "hotspot" analysis to put deputies in the right place, at the right time. Crime trend analysis by skilled crime analysts and enforcement actions by proactive deputies are equally important parts to this innovative methodology. This approach results in the arrest of criminals, reduction of crime, the development of more intelligence and, ultimately to broader, more effective crime fighting. The SADLE Team has developed a strong working relationship with local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies and vital data is shared. After employing this analytical approach to law enforcement for a year, the SADLE team has had tremendous results which include 219 arrests, the seizure of 16 pounds of assorted narcotics and the recovery of 23 weapons. In one "hotspot" area, the rate of residential burglaries dropped 97% when the project was complete. Results like these demonstrate that SADLE is on the cutting edge of crime fighting.
